Overview

B & J Chinese Restaurant & Cold Beer, nestled in the heart of West Philadelphia at 5568 Spruce St, offers a unique blend of classic Chinese flavors alongside the convenience of cold beer on tap. The restaurant carves out a niche for those seeking comfort food with a casual, no-frills atmosphere, perfect for locals and visitors craving fast, satisfying takeout.

The highlight here is the Orange Chicken, a staple that draws in fans of tangy, crispy-sweet dishes. Alongside it, the chicken wings receive frequent praise for their flavor, though some diners note room for improvement in the frying technique. The menu spans from shrimp fried rice and garlic shrimp to the innovative Cheesesteak Roll, a local twist that complements the traditional offerings. This mixture of classic and inventive dishes reflects a kitchen willing to cater to varied palates while maintaining a solid foundation in familiar tastes.

Space-wise, B & J maintains a tight indoor setting, emphasizing quick pickups over dining in. This setup suits individuals and families who prefer to bring their meals home or unwind with a beer alongside takeout. The added beer selection sets B & J apart, appealing especially to those who enjoy pairing their Chinese fare with a chilled drink—an uncommon but welcome combination in a busy neighborhood.

Customer experiences suggest an attentive and warm service team, with the owner’s genuine care leaving a positive impression. However, feedback points to some inconsistency in food execution, such as seasoning and rice texture, and the necessity to regularly refresh cooking oil to maintain taste quality. These nuances hint at a kitchen balancing busy demand with quality control efforts.

Overall, B & J Chinese Restaurant & Cold Beer is a practical choice for a casual meal that brings together quick service, friendly staff, and a distinct pairing of Chinese cuisine with cold brews. It fits well for West Philly residents looking for a familiar comfort meal without the fuss, particularly those who appreciate a local spot with community roots and a twist on takeout dining.

I had high hopes after seeing a tiktok about how someone enjoyed the food and service here. Having said that the service was excellent. The owner was very sweet and thoughtful which I truly appreciated. The food however wasn't the best tasting in the city. The chicken wings were the best part but barely noteworthy. It tastes like my shrimp and broccoli has been seasoned with old bay and my white rice was a bit soft. The fried was was tasty but the general tso chicken was small and a little chewy. Cheesesteak Roll was good. Overall I'm not disappointed with my experience but I would have second thoughts about returning.

First time purchasing food from B&J. All of the reviews were good which made me give it a try and I'm glad I did. I was not one bit disappointed. I ordered 4 chicken wings, shrimp fried rice, shrimp with garlic sauce and an egg roll. All very good. I think I finally found my go to Chinese food place.

I have never had an issue with this place. It's close to home, the food is made quickly and is delicious. Also, I have never had a takeout place that also sells beer! Perfect for hen you don't feel like cooking. It has a narrow indoor space, so call ahead then come when your food is ready for pick-up.

Her food is good and they are really fast. I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 cause they gotta do better with the frying oil (change the oil when they supposed to) cause sometimes when I get chicken wings I can taste the dirty oil and that's not very pleasant. Prices are average and service is good.

Food is delicious and the service is great. Treat her customers with respect and when i came in there i overheard them saying long time no see to a customer and i was instantly at awed. It’s rare other establishments like this treat people kind and show gratitude.
